What Are Tongue Ties And Lip Ties?

What Are Tongue Ties & Lip Ties?

Tongue ties and lip ties are two common kids’ dental procedures that can cause nursing difficulties, speech impairments, and an array of other problems. Luckily, both tongue ties and lip ties can be corrected with a simple, painless procedure called a frenectomy. Here’s everything you need to know about tongue ties and lip ties.

What Is A Tongue Tie?

A tongue tie (or ankyloglossia) is a condition that causes the tongue to be tethered to the floor of the mouth by a band of tissue. Dr. Kim and our team here at Park Hills Family Dentistry are skilled and experienced in this procedure.  The band of tissue is called the frenulum. Tongue-tied babies have difficulty breastfeeding because they cannot make a wide range of motions with their tongues. This can lead to poor latch, low milk transfer, and nipple pain. Tongue-tied babies may also have difficulty swallowing or pronounced lisps due to their restricted tongue movement. It can be very concerning to a new Mom but can be easily fixed.

What Is A Lip Tie?

A lip tie (or labial frenulum) is similar to a tongue tie, but it affects the lips instead of the tongue. Lip-tied babies may have difficulty breastfeeding due to an inability to make a seal with their lips. This can lead to poor latch and low milk transfer. Lip-tied babies may also drool more due to their inability to control the flow of saliva.

Frenectomy Procedure

The good news is that both tongue ties and lip ties can be treated with a simple, painless procedure called a frenectomy. During a frenectomy, your child’s doctor will use laser surgery or a scalpel to release the frenulum. The procedure is quick (it usually takes less than five minutes) and does not require any stitches. Most children tolerate the procedure very well and experience little-to-no discomfort afterward.

If your child is tongue-tied or lip tied, don’t worry – help is available in the form of a simple, painless procedure called a frenectomy. Frenectomies are quick, easy, and relatively risk-free, so if you’re concerned about your child’s tongue tie or lip tie, talk to Dr. Kim, your trusted Lexington KY Family Dentist.  today about treatment options.
