Flossing Tips From Your Dental Hygienist

Flossing Tips From Us To You

Here at Park Hills Family Dentistry, we are dedicated to helping our patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health. Part of achieving optimal oral health is understanding the importance of daily flossing. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from teeth and gums that brushing alone cannot reach. While we recommend that all patients floss daily, we understand that flossing can be difficult to do properly. That’s why we’ve put together this list of tips from our dental hygienists in Lexington KY to help you get the most out of your flossing routine.

How to Floss Properly

There are proper steps to flossing as agreed with our friends over at New Providence Dentistry, a dentist in New Providence. Use about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with. Use your thumb and index fingers to hold the floss tightly against each tooth in a C-shape. Rub the floss up and down against each side of every tooth, making sure to go below the gumline. Unwrap clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. Repeat on upper and lower teeth until all teeth have been cleaned.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip Flossing

Skipping out on flossing can lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar on teeth, which can eventually lead to cavities, gum disease, and other infections. Flossing also helps remove bad breath caused by plaque and bacteria build-up. In short, regular flossing is essential for maintaining optimal oral health.
